ABBREVIATED ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION TERMINOLOGY (AS BASED ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE)

Abstract

Background. Abbreviation in energy and environmental protection terminology is a productive way of word formation. The reason of which is the technologies constant, on the one hand, and the emergence of new complex scientific and technical concepts, on the other hand. New living conditions, development of science and new terms are changing the social requirements that a foreign language teacher is supposed to meet to be able to teach a foreign language to engineering and technical students at the university. Abbreviations are an important component of scientific and technical texts, and knowledge of the main types of abbreviations can facilitate reading and understanding of the text.

The purpose of the work is to identify the main, most frequent types of abbreviations functioning in English terminology on energy and environmental protection.

The material of the study was the English-Russian Dictionary of Energy and Environmental Protection by A.S. Goldberg, which includes about 5,000 abbreviations as well as papers of the International Conference on Environment Pollution and Prevention (ICEPP: 2015- 2020)

Methods. In the course of the research, a theoretical analysis of the scientific literature on the subject under study was carried out. The continuous sampling method and the linguistic observation method were also used.

The results of the study show that the most productive types of abbreviations are initial letter abbreviations. Digital abbreviations and truncated words are used less often.

Practical implications. The practical significance of the research results lies in the possibility of using the obtained data in teaching a foreign language (English) to technical university students and in technical translators training.
