Background. As a natural regulator of the economy, the banking system and its activities channel, regulate, accumulate, and collect funds, as well as control their circulation and act as an intermediary in banking transactions between individuals, organizations, and states. The relevance of this research topic lies in the fact that an analysis of the evolution of banking is important for understanding both the challenges and prospects for the development of the banking system in the Russian Federation today.

Purpose – disclosure of the conceptual and structural aspects of the development of domestic banking in the period under review.

Materials and methods. In studying the topic, the following were used: 1) universal scientific methods; 2) general scientific methods; 3) special, and in this case historical, methods; 4) applied methods of historical research.

Results. It has been established that the structure of the banking system of the Russian Federation currently corresponds to market economic conditions. In 2001 and 2002, the Laws of the Russian Federation «On Banks and Banking Activities» and the Civil Code of the Russian Federation were adopted, establishing the legal status of credit and monetary and banking organizations, their rights, obligations, powers and principles of activity. The history of the development of banking in the Russian Federation is presented in 6 stages of development: 1st − from the middle of the 18th century to 1860; 2nd − from 1860 to 1917; 3rd − 1917 to 1930; 4th − from 1932 to 1987; 5th − from 1988 to 2000; 6th − from 2001 to the present.

Обоснование. Являясь естественным регулятором экономики, банковская система и ее деятельность выполняют функции направления, регулирования, накопления и сбора денежных средств, а также функцию контроля их оборота, посредничества при проведении банковских операций между гражданами, организациями и государствами. Актуальность темы исследования обусловлена тем, что анализ эволюции банковского дела имеет значение для понимания проблем и перспектив развития банковской системы в Российской Федерации на современном этапе.

Цель – раскрытие понятийных и структурных аспектов развития отечественного банковского дела в рассматриваемый период.

Материалы и методы. При изучении темы использовались: 1) универсальные научные методы; 2) общенаучные методы; 3) специальные, в данном случае исторические методы; 4) прикладные методы исторического исследования.

Результаты. Установлено, что структура банковской системы Российской Федерации в настоящий момент соответствует рыночным условиям хозяйствования. В 2001 и 2002 гг. были приняты закон Российской Федерации «О банках и банковской деятельности» и Гражданский кодекс Российской Федерации, устанавливающие правовой статус кредитно-денежных и банковских организаций, их права, обязанности, полномочия и основы деятельности. История развития банковского дела в Российской Федерации представляется в 6 этапах развития: 1-й – с середины XVIII в. до 1860 г.; 2-й – с 1860 по 1917 г.; 3-й – с 1917 по 1930 г.; 4-й – с 1932 по 1987 г.; 5-й – с 1988 по 2000 г.; 6-й – с 2001 г. по настоящее время.
